Rivers’s Sleight of Hand: Making Three Stars Think as One
BOSTON — Doc Rivers has a trophy that bears Red Auerbach’s likeness and the words “Coach of the Year” — an
award that has nothing to do with Rivers’s success with the Celtics, but perhaps foreshadowed it.
Rivers made his N.B.A. finals debut Thursday because he successfully coaxed three All-Stars into sharing the glory and
blending their talents for the greater good. It is a skill he probably mastered eight years ago, when he had far less talent to
coax.
As the rookie head coach for the Orlando Magic, Rivers took a roster of journeymen, misfits and undeveloped prospects
and guided it to a 41-41 record, just shy of a playoff berth. The feat was recognized by voters in the news media, who
awarded Rivers the 2000 coach of the year trophy.
In his first three years as Celtics coach, Rivers was often faulted for his game strategy and his rotation. Only a year ago,
fans at TD Banknorth Garden were screaming for his dismissal. When the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen
last summer, to form a nucleus with Paul Pierce, there were doubts that Rivers could mold them into a contender.
But the Celtics won a league-best 66 games in the regular season and are battling the Los Angeles Lakers for the
championship. The presence of Garnett, Pierce and Allen makes it look deceptively easy. But it took a certain amount of
selling by Rivers.
“He just had it mapped out how he wanted to do it,” Allen said. “And we just had to say, ‘O.K., what do you need
me to do?’ ”
Allen added, “We couldn’t all be mavericks out there.”
Looking back, it is easy to see the roots of Rivers’s skills as a motivator. The Magic’s agenda in 1999 was not so much
to win as it was to clear salary-cap space for the free-agent class of 2000. Team officials hoped to sign two elite players
and set their sights on Tim Duncan, Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill.
Clearing cap space required some short-term suffering. Orlando entered the season with a roster full of players with
expiring contracts.
The Magic’s leading scorer that season was point guard Darrell Armstrong, at 16.1 points per game. Its shooting guard
was Ron Mercer, an impulsive scorer who played for seven teams in an eight-year career. Its best talent was Corey
Maggette, an undisciplined rookie who played mostly as a reserve. Way down the depth chart was an undrafted fourth-year
center named Ben Wallace, who later became a defensive force in Detroit but who, at age 25, was just another player
trying to stay in the league.
The list of names that filled out the roster is thoroughly uninspiring: Chris Gatling, Tariq Abdul-Wahad, John Amaechi,
Monty Williams, Chucky Atkins, Pat Garrity, Michael Doleac, Bo Outlaw, Matt Harpring.
There were good guys among the bunch, and a number of valuable role players. But they were understandably expected to
finish near the bottom of the league. Instead, they stayed in contention for a playoff berth right down to the season’s
final days. Finishing with a .500 record still seems like a remarkable achievement.
Rivers was only 38 and had never coached at any level, even as an assistant. The lesson he preached then is the same one
he brought to Boston four years later: “If you can get five guys to function at the same time, with or without stars, then
you have a chance,” Rivers said Thursday. “That’s what I sold to Paul when I first got in the door. It wasn’t
received well at first, and then it turned out to be great for him, and obviously has turned out to be pretty good for us.”
Rivers chuckled Wednesday when he heard Lakers Coach Phil Jackson discussing the challenge of reaching players.
Jackson mentioned that young players in particular can be hardheaded and tough to reach. “The exact thing that I’ve
been saying for three years,” Rivers said. “It’s true, though.”
Rivers later learned how to deal with the peccadilloes of superstars, when the Magic signed McGrady and Hill in the
summer of 2000, and drafted Mike Miller.
The challenge then, Rivers said, was “getting them to see the same thing that the first group saw: that teamwork,
offensively and defensively, will make you a team, and individual play will not.”
“I brought that here,” he said.
The advantage Rivers had this season, other than an infusion of talent, was that his lineup became older almost overnight.
Garnett, Allen and Pierce were established stars with great résumés who no longer needed to prove themselves.
“It’s always been easier with veterans,” Rivers said. “No. 1, you know who they are and they’ve already accepted
who they are. And No. 2, the sense of urgency. Veterans have a sense of urgency about them, because they know the
hourglass is running out. And they want to get something done significant in their careers as far as winning, because most
of the individual stuff has already been established. Where young guys are thinking: ‘Well, I’ve got to establish myself
first. I’m not buying into the role thing.’ ”
Another coach in 1999-2000 had a great season, winning 26 more games than Rivers’s Orlando team. Jackson led the
Lakers to the title that year, but he finished second to Rivers for coach of the year.
